Oil on Canvas
20" (in diameter)
This Self Portrait by Sarah Kaiser addresses the theme of introspection.
Kaiser has rendered herself in an honest manner that isn't touched up or photoshopped.
Modern media presents us with the problem of simulacra:
identifying the real is difficult since media such as photography, video, and animation
enables artists to manipulate imagery to a high degree.
However, Kaiser doesn't strive to be a photorealist; t
o the contrary, she prefers to paint because she is able to project her reactions to her subjects.
She functions as a conduit to channel her energy into the paint.
In this introspective rendering, she has captured a fleeting
expression of her true self: expression-less and devoid of any make-up.
Her intention was not to glamour ize her image, but to lay bare her unadulterated, private self.
