Self Portrait with Pipe
Ink Watercolor on Envelope
12" x 7"
Carl was asked by one of his colleagues if he was going to participate in this years
self portrait exhibition and he decided that it wouldn't make any sense to paint a self portrait at this time,
however a few days went by and Carl went through some of his older works on paper and
found a piece that he had remembered during a very difficult time in his life.
It was 1992 and Carl was going through a divorce and both his best friend and father pasted away.
Carl didn't have any money and he started smoking a briar pipe to calm his nerves.
Then one night with limited art materials, Carl grabbed an envelope some ink and
dried water color and took a hard look at himself.
Carl stated "What this piece lacks in accuracy, makes up for in human emotion.
It shows hope and determination through a troubled time.
I hope you enjoy the piece as I have after not seeing it for over 20years."
