This work titled Scout 3 created by Benedict Oddi is part of a series of works that
reveal the anxiety and sublimity of the unknown, arrived through the artist's strong desire for escape and exploration.
Shelter, food, and safety — we search for these possibilities in reality and in this parallel realism.
Cresting the hillside or peering across the valley for the first time, scouting, we confront that awesome unknown and
for a split second realize our incredible smallness.
However, these landscapes, these labyrinths are more difficult to navigate — they exist inside the self.
Oddi describes this work as concerned with human nature and social critique.
He deals with concepts of power struggle and its effect on the nature of free will.
The artist looks to contemporary events, life experiences, memory, and artifact objects to inform his theater-like work.
As a result, situations of anxiety and the poignant blend with fantastic invention.
