Resource
Oil on Canvas
36 "x 60"
Resource by Marina Ross was created as a response to
having a body and determining the most efficient way to use it.
The title Resource comes from the view that the body is a resource
for us to navigate the world with but also calls into question different types of resources.
Objects throughout the composition, such as the hairbrush and the shampoo bottle in the background,
are used by the subject to engage with the world on a physical level,
but how does the subject use her own body?
Resource by Marina Ross explores issues related to corporeality
--having a body--and the way paint embodies that idea.
While the traditional notion has always linked the body to fear--
being fearful of the body because it will eventually die--
this piece questions how to use the body while it's alive.
The body is at the foreground of the composition, suggesting the body's immediate presence in our lives.
Because we experience the world through our bodies, we cannot ignore how we use it.
The way we use our bodies directly affects the way that we engage with the world and ultimately perceive it.
The figure cuts across the three-point perspective of the background
suggesting that our corporeality distorts a portion of our perspective.
Resource by Marina Ross is part of a series of works that deals with
the difficult relationship we have with our own bodies.
Through the exploration of basic human functions, the work aims to explore the control we feel
we have over our bodies and the control our bodies can have over us.
Through loose brushstrokes and vibrant colors, the paint is a motif for the body.
